Social Work at La Trobe

If you know a student who’s a passionate and empathetic person, and who aspires to support others and effect social change, social work could be the career for them. The rapidly growing industry employs more than 40,000 workers, the majority of whom are full-time.  

La Trobe University alumni Sophie Cleal graduated with a Bachelor of Human Services/Master of Social Work in 2019. She now works at North East Support & Action for Youth (NESAY) as a Case Practitioner within a specialist school setting.  

“After previous experiences at NESAY, I saw the opportunity within this role and knew it aligned with my goals to support students with mental health in a school setting. Social work is an extremely broad area of expertise, encompassing a wide variety of tasks with lots of different kinds of people. My role consists of supporting disadvantaged youth within a local specialist school through one-on-one support. This involves advocating and providing students with access to other services, as well as supporting their family to achieve their goals.” 

“There are many aspects of my job that are rewarding, however the most rewarding part of my role is to see a young person achieve their goals and see change within themselves. Becoming a social worker can lead you to many areas within the community and workplaces and will always lead to rewarding work.”
